Memphis is in the Final Four for the first time since 1985. John Calipari is in the national semi-finals for the first time since he led UMass there in 1996. They might be the hottest team in the country heading into these final two games. Coach Calipari called into the Jungle on Tuesday to talk about how there are people in the media that hope his team loses and how much of a basketball freak Derek Rose is.
Cal is truly one of the best interviews because he never gives you the straight, boring “coach speak” for answers. He always comes up with something off-the-wall and interesting to say. He said members of the media hope they lose because they are not a part of the establishment, they are not a Duke or a North Carolina or a UCLA. I'm not sure if that theory holds any water, but I do think that Cal believes it.
Freshman point guard Derek Rose has played big this entire tournament. Cal said he had no idea when he brought Derek in that he had such a will to win and that he was so intelligent on a basketball court. Cal probably only has Rose for another week, so Memphis better take care of business now!
