It would be pretty cool to say that you are the “logo” of a major sports league. Jerry West can say that! Over the years, I have interviewed thousands of people in sports. And Jerry West is not just the only sports celebrity I have interviewed who is a league's “logo”, he is also one of the most interesting people I have spoken to over the years. Jerry called into the show on Wednesday to talk about life in retirement, Kobe Bryant and Tiger Woods.
Jerry retired last year after spending several seasons as the president of the Memphis Grizzlies. He told me that he is enjoying retirement and it didn't sound like he misses working for a team very much. He told me that there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment in winning championships because disaster could be right around the corner. He does not miss that anxiety.
Because I knew Jerry was a big-time golfer and golf enthusiast, I asked him his thoughts on Tiger Woods. He said some real compelling stuff about Tiger, including his opinion that he is the most impressive athlete he has ever seen. I think one sports legend praising the best player in another sport is pretty cool!
