Well, it was bad while it lasted. And, apparently it’s over. The Brewers have finally seen enough of former All-Star and Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne “dragging his gas can” to the mound! And has informed him he isn’t going to “burn down” any more stadiums in the near future.
Actually, he told them: “I don’t deserve the 9th right now. It’s pretty simple.” You know it’s bad if the guy is begging to get off his “gig”! You never see that! And he admits, it is bad…that mentally, he’s wrecked: “It’s mental; I think it’s negative thinking that creeps back into your mind. It’s a matter of going out there and thinking three outs before I can get even one.” Bottom line…he doesn’t want to be out there. And, when your closer says he doesn’t want the ball in the 9th, it’s over.
Manager Ned Yost has no choice. Yost says Gagne needs a mental break. Yeah, if by “mental break”, you mean a break from “caving in the sweat spot” on the other team’s bats…then I’d agree, he needs a “mental break”. The Brewers are trying to break through and legitimately. And, it’s impossible to do if the guy at the back end of the pen is a certified, registered “gas-can lugging arsonist”! Put down that box of “Blue Tips”, Eric! Never a good thing when your closer’s best pitch is a “molotov cocktail”!
