Ten years after last having a manager gig in the big leagues, Blue Jays' skipper Cito Gaston is back where he began. Toronto hired back their old manager after firing John Gibbons two weeks ago. All Cito ever did as a manager was win two World Series championships and four division titles, so I guess it makes a lot of sense that he would go ten years between jobs. Cito called into the Jungle on Tuesday to talk about why he had to wait so long to be a manager in the big leagues again and what he plans to do with the last place Blue Jays.
Well before the Blue Jays made this hire I had been saying on my radio show that it is unbelievable that Cito Gaston never got another shot at managing a team after he was dismissed from Toronto in 1997. He told me that he has no idea why so many teams passed on him and it got so frustrating that he stopped interviewing for jobs. He told the baseball community that if someone wanted to hire him they could offer him a job, but he would not interview for it.
The current Blue Jays team is in last place in that deep A.L. East, but they are playing better under Cito. He admitted to me that they might be a bit too far back and maybe chasing too many teams to make the playoffs this season, but he hopes turn things around and start playing over .500 baseball.
