Sportswriter Philadelphia Inquirer / 7-2-2008

The most popular sound clip played in the Jungle nowadays is from the Brett Myers melt-down after a Phillies game last year. If you are not aware of the clip then you have not been listening! Myers was sent down to Triple-A by the Phillies on Tuesday so he all but forced me to play more of his tirade when he, among other things, called a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter a 'retard'. Well, I thought it was appropriate to have that Inquirer writer on our show to tell his side of the story. So, I put Sam Carchidi on the program Wednesday to talk about that now famous incident with the testy right-hander.

Myers had just given up two home runs in the ninth inning and taken the loss. Sam tells the story about how Myers was talking to a bunch of reporters when Sam walked up and that Myers had kept referring to those two home runs as 'pop-ups'. So Sam did his job and asked Myers if he really thought those to home runs were just 'pop-ups'? Myers then uttered, “did you think they crushed 'em'?” And when Sam gave his honest answer of, “I thought the first one was out, don't know about the second one”…it was officially ‘on’ after that!

Myers then said the now famous phrase, “well, you're a retard, you don't know (bleep) about baseball, you're just fillin' in for someone.” Sam's response to that insult was priceless! Without missing a beat, Sam replied with "how do you spell 'retard'?" As Sam explained it, he wasn't trying to call Myers a mental midget or anything like that. He basically wanted to draw attention to how ridiculous that word was…so he asked him to spell it out for him.

I thought it was a brilliant comeback and one that will never be forgotten on this show.
