LeBron Mural Is Gone

Get a life. Seriously.

July 12, 2018 - 9:54 am

It’s Thursday and I’m talking about a LeBron James mural in Los Angeles for the second time this week. That’s because on Monday, I sat in this very same chair and addressed people who were defacing a mural of James in Venice. I believed at the time that my message was clear and simple: knock it off, losers.

If you call yourself a Laker fan and you’re defacing a mural of LeBron James in Laker gear, you are not a Laker fan. I thought that was pretty simple and clear and that I would never have to talk about it again. Because I thought this was a one-off. A knucklehead inspired by another knucklehead offering a bounty on twitter to deface the mural.

But I was wrong. Because yesterday, the artist himself, Jonas Never, painted the mural white after some dope hit it with yellow paint. So the mural is no more.

The artist told ESPN: "I thought I had learned a long time ago to never touch religion or politics…I guess it is never touch religion, politics or anyone against Kobe.”

I hope you’re all proud of yourselves. The artist covered the whole thing up. You ruined it. You threw yellow paint all over someone else’s art work and in the process, covered yourself in stupidity.

You’re not protecting Kobe’s legacy. You’re destroying your own and making the fanbase look like complete morons.

Do I have to remind you that after years of being ignored by free agents, the biggest free agent just signed with your team? That’s a good thing. A very, very, very good thing. That’s cause for celebration, not cause for vandalism.

As Josh Hart tweeted: ‘This is sad and disrespectful.... LA we better than this’

I’m with you, Josh. We are better than this. Or at least I thought so.

Because apparently some of you are not. Apparently some of you losers aren’t better than that. Apparently some of you losers think that having the best player in basketball on your team is a bad thing. Apparently some of you losers think that somehow LeBron James wearing a Laker jersey is a threat to what Kobe Bryant did in a Laker jersey.

And you could not be more wrong. Not only are you an idiot, but you’re coming from a place of fear or weakness. Nothing LeBron does in purple and gold will take away from what Kobe did in purple and gold. That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. And the fact that you’re willing to stop at a hardware store or Home Depot to buy paint and then drive to Venice to throw it on a wall, only proves that. Get a life. Seriously.

Remember when Kobe won championships with the Lakers and that took away from all of Magic’s accomplishments? Remember when James Worthy won a ring and it erased everything that Jerry West ever achieved? Or how about that time when Kareem won a title and everyone forgot about Wilt? No. You don’t remember any of that because none of that happened.

And because Laker fans, actual Laker fans, party every time their team wins a title. Not just when their team wins a title with one particular guy on it.

If Josh Hart wins a ring, does that mean that Kobe isn’t as great as you thought he was? Hell no. If Brandon Ingram wins a title, will there be pressure to take down one of Kobe’s jerseys from the rafters? Not a chance. Just as Kobe’s career won’t change based on what LeBron does.

And while he has no control over what you losers are apparently doing in his name, you are making Kobe look bad. You know, the guy you’re supposedly defending. The guy who welcomed LeBron to Los Angles. You’re making him look bad.

Don’t get me wrong. This has nothing to do with Kobe. He’s not doing it, he’s not encouraging it. And it’s probably only a tiny, gross subset of Kobe fans, but damn, you’re making everyone look bad. You want to make yourself look bad, fine. Do that on your own time. Don’t make Kobe look bad and don’t make my city look bad. This is the second time I’ve had to talk about something like this and it better be the last. Knock it off, losers.
