Dark day for the NFL and a very sad day here for all of us on the Jim Rome Show. The Mulleted Madman has passed on. All Pro defensive end and all world gentleman Jared Allen is gone. At least, the Jared Allen I know; dude went and took down his mullet! For real. Once you get over the initial shock and awe of the thing, the first question that must be asked is, why?! Why would the leader of the Mullet Militia, the Pioneer, who took his Mullet viral with an iphone app, the legend who once told me that “It’s not a haircut, it’s a lifestyle” Why would he, abandon the cause he’s leading.

The Big Aristotle once opined, when I get mad, I win championships. Well, when Kobe Bryant gets mad, cats get carved. And it’s been quite some time since I’ve seen him as bent as he was last night. I don’t think his teammates were looking for the seat next to him on the fight back. Because seeing him after the game was to see him in full on, these-guys-better-get-their-bleep-together-immediately mode. Or to quote Chris Walken for the second day in a row: “You’ve got me in a vendetta kind of mood.” And after seeing his guys outworked, outhustled and out hearted, Bryant was in a vendetta kind of mood himself: “We lost the game because our defense sucked. We’ve gotta defend. When the shot goes up, you’ve gotta get your bleep back.” And when asked how he felt heading into Game 5, he deadpanned, “Jovial.” I think by jovial, he means murderous.

Both the Phoenix and Laker benches finally remembered who they were last night in Game 4. The Laker reserves were completely owned by Phoenix’s just as everyone had expected them to be, the whole series. And that’s why they’re headed back to L.A. tied up at two games apiece. Well, that and the Phoenix zone. A zone which Phil Jackson insists isn’t bothering the Lakers: “We shot 49 percent, didn’t we? That’s pretty good. Nothing wrong with that. I wouldn’t say we’re struggling against the zone. I think we’re struggling at the defensive end.”
