Ol Gunslinger's Playbook

The Ol’ Gunslinger is running his look at me playbook to perfection isn’t he? How many times have we seen this. He’s still not saying anything publicly but the message he’s sending to his toadies in the media is, ‘Wow, I really don’t know where any of this is coming from. I mean, sure my ankle hurts, but I never said I was retiring. Gee whiz, how did all of this stuff get out there? I’m just not smart enough to figure any of this out. I’m just going to go sit on the tractor for awhile and pray that the world stops spinning so fast. This guy really is a beauty. He wants you to think he’s Johnny Hayseed and that he loves the game so much he’d play it for free. But he’s really Einstein in pads, and he’s about to play it for $20 mill.

Bad Move For Celts

Although Shaq O’Neal’s been looking for $8 mill a year, the Celtics reportedly will be able to get him for the veteran’s minimum of $1.4 mill. You get what you pay for. Or in this case maybe not. I don’t like this deal. Not even at that cut rate. Sure, they’re waiting on Kendrick Perkins and it sounds good and looks good on paper. But they were already too old. And they just got older and slower. And on top of that, you’re adding a potentially disruptive personality to a locker room that already has too many of them. And he won’t make the sort of commitment defensively Doc Rivers demands of his guys. The circus he brings to a team, with his TV shows, second careers and general locker room goofiness now outweigh what he can do for you on the floor. They’re better off just bringing in a serviceable player without O’Neal’s baggage until Perkins does come back. More often than not, I’m on board with what Danny Ainge does, but not this time. I don’t like this... More »
