Generally, I'm not a huge fan of sports movies. Not unless someone like Adam Sandler puts me in one like the Longest Yard, or Space Jam back in the day, and I can pull those 2 dollar residual checks once a quarter. Every once in a while, you’ll get a Friday Night Lights, The Blind Side, or a documentary like Hoop Dreams, but for the most part, they don't work because the actors aren't athletic enough to pull it off. And the stories are too clichéd. That said…I love that Robert De Niro has signed on to play Vince Lombardi. That's what I'm saying. An icon playing an icon! Remember the old debate: De Niro or Pacino? Sort of like The Who or the Stones? To me there, was never a debate, as good as Pacino was, it was De Niro and everyone else. But no one has asked that question in a long time. Let's face it, it hasn't been a great decade for the man. At this point, Paulie D is a bigger draw than Bobby D. I understand that most big-time movie stars reach a point where it becomes less about reading scripts and more about cashing checks. And that a lot of terrible movies have paid for a number of nice vacation homes and swimming pools. But it should have never reached a point where Rocky and Bullwinkle seems like a good idea. At least not for this guy! So this is the right role at the right time. Kill this, and you'll buy yourself another decade of relevance, big man. (Oh, and for the record, definitely The Who). |
