Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum had said previously that all “Issues were resolved” and it was just a matter of finding a date for Mayweather-Pacquiao. Mayweather promoter Oscar De La Hoya said last month negotiations were quote “Very close.” But Mayweather and his people insist negotiations never even took place. So someone’s lying. And apparently it’s Mayweather and his handlers. HBO Sports President Ross Greeburg says there absolutely was a negotiation and that the fight’s not happening this year: “I had been negotiating with a representative from each side since May 2, carefully trying to put the fight together. Hopefully someday this fight will happen. Sports fans deserve it.” They do. The question is, after being jerked around as badly as they’ve been, do they even still want it?

Not nearly as much as they did a month ago. And even less if you make them wait until next year when both fighters are past their prime. Look, there’s only one reason this fight isn’t happening and that’s because Mayweather doesn’t want it. Mayweather has already graced us with his presence with his one fight for the year, so he’s done. You’re lucky he even let you see him fight at all this year. Ask him. The only thing more infuriating than his insistence that he’s the greatest fighter ever, is his fight one year, take one year off approach to the sport. Not only are you not the greatest ever, you’re not even the greatest fighting today. Ducking this guy proves that. And it’s killing the legacy you’ve worked so hard to protect. The only person who doesn’t want this fight is Mayweather. And that’s why it’s not happening.
