Clippers-76ers Trade Reaction

Bobi and Tobi is going East.

February 06, 2019 - 10:43 am

How did you sleep last night? Did you hear that noise around 2:17AM on the East Coast and 11:17pm in the West? Because if you thought you felt a mini-earthquake and jumped on twitter to check the Richter scale, you were wrong. It wasn’t an earthquake. It was a bomb. A Woj Bomb.

And it was one hell of a bomb. A massive trade went down involving a team from LA. But it wasn’t the Lakers.

Are you sitting down, because this is going to take me a minute to run down? The Los Angeles Clippers are sending Tobias Harris and Mike Scott to Philadelphia in exchange for Wilson Chandler, Landry Shamet, Mike Muscala, Philly’s 2020 protected first round pick, Miami’s unprotected 2021 first rounder, and second round picks in 2021 and 2023.

And I know what your first reaction is, it was mine, too. They’ve busted up Bobi and Tobi. Wrong! The best part of this deal is that Boban is going to Philly as well. Bobi and Tobi is going East. But more on that in a moment.

Because that is an absolute monster swing by Philly. If you thought trading for Jimmy Butler earlier this year was a big move, they just chased it with another. They looked around at the East, realized it was there for the taking, and just went all-in.

And I love it. I don’t know if it will work. I don’t know if all those guys will get on the same page quickly, but if there’s anyone who can do it, it’s Brett Brown and if that happens, look the hell out.

Here’s their starting lineup: Ben Simmons, JJ Redick, Jimmy Butler, Tobias Harris, Joel Embiid. Is that any good? Four All-Star talents and one of the best three-point shooters in the game? Get out of here. Plus, Mike Scott, giving you a four off the bench who can shoot. And Boban who can give you 10 minutes of unstoppable offense a night and hours of fun on a go-kart. Nice.

The only thing better than “Bobi And Tobi” is “Bobi and Tobi and Joel.” You’ve just united the greatest comedy duo in the Western Conference with the greatest person on the internet. It’s the Keymaster and the Gatekeeper.

And if Philly really wants to keep moving, they’ve got Markelle Fultz who they could deal for some of the depth they just lost.

Damn that’s a big swing. And damn do I love it. There are so many teams in so many sports that are just happy being bad. Or being mediocre. And so few teams who are looking to make a big swing, who are going all in and want to win. Philly is one of those teams.

First year GM Elton Brand is doing work, now. First Jimmy Butler and now Tobias Harris? That’s brass. Brass as hell.

Yeah, they’re going to have some cap issues eventually, but do you think fans show up at games to root for salary cap space? Hell no. Fans want wins. Players want to win. They’re rooting for teams, not Excel spreadsheets and Philly is saying, you rode with us when we sucked, now let’s give you something back. Let’s go win the East.

And let’s not get it twisted. As good as that lineup is, even if they all get on the same page, they’re not going to be favored to beat Golden State in the Finals, which is why I love the attitude behind the deal even more. So many teams are looking at Golden State and giving themselves a pass on actually being good. So many teams are saying we can’t compete with Golden State, so let’s not try. And a few teams are saying, bleep that, let’s give it a shot.

And then there is the Clippers side of things. And it’s pretty easy for people to come in a say they just got worked. They just gave up Tobias Harris, who should’ve been an All-Star for a number of pieces and picks. And if that’s your take, you should sit down.

Because as much as Elton Brand is doing work for this season, the Clippers front office is doing work for this summer.

Let’s work this out, shall we? The Clippers have made no secret of the fact that they are swinging for the fences in the summer. They are going after big fish. They’re going after whales.   Kawhi, KD, maybe Kyrie or Butler. They probably weren’t going to keep Tobias Harris and sign him to the deal that he deserved. So they moved him and got a lot back.

With respect, that “a lot back” isn’t really about Wilson Chandler and Mike Muscala. It’s not even about Landry Shamet, although he can play. It’s about Philly’s 2020 protected first round pick, Miami’s unprotected 2021 first rounder, and second round picks in 2021 and 2023, which are both from Detroit and will probably be high second round picks.

Great, Rome. They have draft picks for the future. Right. Which they can trade this summer if they need to. And while nobody is coming to Staples and chanting “Salary Cap! Salary Cap!” They have a huge chunk now and they could have a ton with one more trade.

Make one more big deal, and they can sign two big free agents. Stay pat and they can sign one and trade for one. Or sign one now and have flexibility for a future summer.

Hell, remember the other day when Anthony Davis released his list of teams that he’d re-sign with and the Clippers were on it? They didn’t have enough for a trade for him then. But they do now.

But wait, it gets better. That move with Philly doesn’t just give LA ammo for future deals, it also makes Philly better. That shows LA got taken, right? Wrong. Because making Philly better, makes it harder for Toronto to reach the Finals, which makes it harder for Toronto to keep Kawhi, and might just drive Kawhi to the Clippers.

And here’s another thing: if the Clippers miss the playoffs this year, they get to keep their own first round pick instead of sending it to Boston. And this deal pretty much assures that they will miss the playoffs. And if they keep that pick, it hurts Boston’s ability to trade for Davis or someone else.

Holy freaking crap. There’s next level and then there’s whatever level the Clippers front office is working on. The Clippers are full-on galaxy brain at this point.

This is the rare deal where both teams got over. They have two different sets of priorities and they matched.

Nothing but respect for Elton Brand and the Clippers front office. I love this deal for everyone. Or, in the words of those Clippers bros: Turn up. Love you guys. Awesome.  SOMEHOW, SOME WAY, I REALLY HAVE TO THINK MY MAN LEE JENKINS WAS BEHIND ALL OF THIS!
