Cam Newton

USA Today

Remember when the New England Patriots signed Cam Newton? Remember how fired up everyone in New England was to have a former league MVP sign for practically pennies? Remember how everyone was so amped about his potential and were salivating about what what he could do with Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniel’s?

Of course you don’t. Because there were plenty of people who were grumbling and muttering about it. And I’m not talking about fans of other teams who were bent that the Patriots got over again, I’m talking about people in New England who were bent that he was a Patriot.

And they started talking about the clothes he wears and how he celebrates and using words like “showboat” and talking about how Newton didn’t understand the Patriot Way. And it didn’t take long before going from there to junk like Belichick wouldn’t tolerate Newton’s “antics” and that he better dial it down or he wouldn’t last in New England.

They made it sound like Newton forced the Patriots to sign him, instead of the Patriots going to him to sign him. They made it sound like Newton was going to be doing a hostile takeover of the Patriots, you know, because that’s something that could ever possibly happen with Bill Belichick in charge.

The greatest coach in NFL history effectively ran off the greatest quarterback in history, but he’s going to get steamrolled by a free agent quarterback coming off an injury? Sure he wasn’t.

And of course that same crowd was talking about how he probably wouldn’t beat out Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. Yeah, because Stiddy and or Hoyer the Destroyer were going to beat out Cam Newton.

Hope y’all are hungry, because you’re about to get a big ass crow sando shoved right down your collective pie holes:

That’s because ESPN reports that Bill Belichick told players yesterday that Cam Newton is the starting quarterback.

Should I slap some mustard or mayo on that crow sando: because it’s one thing to be wrong: but it’s entirely another to be THAT wrong; entirely to be saying stupid things like, the reason the hood let TB-43 go is because he loves him some Stiddy: or that the Destroyer is the ultimate pro: Newton has to prove he’s better than both of them; and more importantly has to prove he fits with the way we do things around here. Listen. As always, you’re entitled to your takes. NO MATTER HOW HORRIBLE AND WRONG THEY ARE. And those takes are horrible and wrong. Some of you dopes were making Stiddy and the Destroyer out to be Montana and Young.

Newton wasn’t competing against Stiddy and the Destroyer: he was competing against himself. And his foot. And his shoulder. C’mon man; Stiddy and the destroyer barely belong in the same quarterback room as this guy, much less on the field instead of him:

Man, it really had to sting all those haters when Belichick told SiriusXM earlier this week that:

"I can see why he had the kind of success that he had at Auburn and at Carolina. In talking to people that were with him there, the things they said about him at Auburn and at Carolina -- from a decade ago or two, three years ago, or even last year -- it was all the same and it showed up here.”

And AS FAR AS HIM NOT FITTING INTO THE ALMIGHTY PATRIOT WAY, THE OLD MAN ADDED: "He's an extremely hard worker. Nobody works harder than Cam does. He's here early. He stays late. Some players like to work on things they're good at. Like if you're strong on the bench press, then you just keep throwing more weight on the bench. But Cam's the type of player that works on things that he's not as good at, and really tries to improve on a daily basis. That's something I really respect about him."

Yeah, sure, he’s a hard worker and he’s always working on his weaknesses, and you respect him for that. But what about his energy? That’s got to be pretty toxic, right: I mean, this dude has to bringing all the other dudes down, instead of lifting the up, right?  Ehehhhhh!

"He has a great personality. Gets along with everybody. He's very social and has a great presence, whether it's in a small room of a couple people, or in a bigger group. And he's highly competitive. He always wants to do his best and do better than the guy he's competing against. Everybody is competitive but I just think there are different degrees of it. Based on what I’ve seen I'd put him in the top echelon of that. His competition extends way beyond the field. It's off the field. In meetings. Training and so forth. It's important to him be the first guy up the hill when we run sprints. It's important to him to be first in everything he competes in.

Damn haters….hardest worker in the room….and dude has IT for days. Need a glass of hatorade to dislodge that crow sando which is surely still stuck in your esophagus??

And you know that crowd isn’t happy about this, they’re pissed. They’d rather be right than have a quarterback who’s won the job going away and gives them all sorts of hope even with TB43 gone. And you know this same crowd  is going to be waiting for him to screw up so they can pounce.

Oh, and there is one other detail that’s going to stick in the craw of all the dipes who claimed that Belichick wouldn’t tolerate Cam’s antics and shenanigans. Here are your captains for the New England Patriots this year:

Matthew Slater
David Andrews
James White
Ja’Whaun Bentley
Devin McCourty
Jason McCourty
My guy, Lawrence Guy
And Cam Newton

So not only did he come in and win the starting job, reportedly, but he was voted a team captain. The guy didn’t even sign his deal until July 8th and he did it during a pandemic and less than two months later, he won the respect of the locker room to the point that they said, he is one of our leaders.

Newton posted a graphic of the captains to Instagram with the caption: Dear New England, I will not and do not take this opportunity for granted. I’m so grateful for this organization, my teammates, and this city. Thank you! No need to look back now…LFG. Hashtag shine through shade. Hashtag not for likes just for life. Love

I hate to say I told you so, but let’s be honest and let’s be real, I told you so. I hate to say how the hell does that taste, but how the hell does that taste?

Remember when people were saying that Belichick wouldn’t like Newton and that Newton’s attitude wouldn’t mesh with the Patriot Way? Or whatever other crap they were grasping at? Because it seems Belichick likes him enough to place the offense in his hands and the team likes him enough to place their trust in him.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, you don’t have to like Cam Newton. He’s not for everyone. But if you’re going to rip on him, be clear about what you’re ripping him for. And make sure it’s legit and you’re not just making crap up. Normally I hate to say I told you so. But I told you so. And I said about this guy long before the patriots signed him.  And I really said it right after they signed him; I said not all of the hood’s moves pan out: and that he has made some personnel moves.  But I said loved this one: I loved it then and I love even more now.
