Josh Rosen’s Night

When Arizona moved up to 10 to take him, the wait was over.

With Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Josh Allen off the board, that left one member of the big four still available: Josh Rosen. And just from the cutaway shots to him, you could tell he wasn’t happy about it. And that was awesome. Not because I like seeing shots of potential draft picks suffering, but because you could tell his motivation was rising by the second and the chip on his shoulder was getting bigger with each passing pick.

And when Arizona moved up to 10 to take him, the wait was over. Not the wait for Rosen to find a team, but the wait for Rosen to unload on everyone who didn’t take him. And he brought the heat as only Josh Rosen, starting with this line to ESPN: “I’m more motivated than I’ve ever been in my entire life.”

Considering how motivated he’s been to this point, that’s saying something. But he wasn’t done saying things. He later said: “There were nine mistakes made ahead of me. I will make sure over the next decade or so they know they made a mistake.”

I can’t decide if that is red hot or ice cold. Honestly, it’s a combination of both and I love it. He’s not saying that because he thinks it sounds good or because it will fire up Cardinal fans, although it does and it should. That is coming from somewhere deep in his soul.

And he dropped another great line: “Maybe if I shut up these last three years I could have been picked higher.”

Maybe, but I’m so glad you didn’t shut up over the last three years, because that’s what makes this guy unique.

He was pissed. Majorly pissed. And he wasn’t afraid to show it. That’s not me saying that, that’s Josh Rosen saying that: “I was pretty pissed off when I fell and one, two and three went by, and I was really angry teams were passing on me. I was honestly expecting to get picked at some point and have to fake a smile and pretend to be happy. But for some reason when I got picked all of that went away and it just went to straight to excitement and relief. The biggest thing was definitely motivation, and I feel determined. . . . I’m just more motivated than ever.”

When he was asked why he thought so many teams passed on him, he wasn’t really interested in speculating: “I don’t know, and I don’t care. I’m happy it happened. I’m really happy it happened. I’m glad I’m at 10. I’m glad the Cardinals came up and got me. I really think it’s a match made in heaven. I wouldn’t [change anything]. You guys might call B.S. on me, but complete honest from the bottom of my heart, there’s not another team I’d rather go to.”

And honestly, from the bottom of my heart, if I were him, there’s not another team I’d rather go to, either. Larry Fitzgerald. David Johnson. Playing in Arizona. That is absolutely perfect for him and for the Cardinals who just got the most pro-ready quarterback in the draft and the most motivated quarterback in the draft. And the greatest quote in years.
